BU Hosts President’s Media Dinner

Journalists must prioritize national peace and unity over sensationalism while carrying out their professional duties.

President/Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ademola S. Tayo gave this charge during the interactive session at the media dinner with members of the Education Writers Association of Nigeria, EWAN.

Prof Tayo, who expressed concerns  over the spate of fake news on the social media in the name of anonymous sources or compromise, warned that disinformation could  lead to “misjudgements, unrest, and wrong choices by citizens especially who lack the media literacy skills to evaluate the content.”

“With the privilege you have as media professionals, comes also a great responsibility of the peace and development of our country,” he said.

“While you enjoy the freedom to express yourselves, you must also recognize the limits and ethics of your profession. You must be cautious not to fuel hate or incite violence with your reporting.”

Beyond the charge for ethics, credibility and objectivity, the interactive session also provided platform for sharing the University’s academic and medical advancement.

He also shared the institutional drive towards a sustainable clean environment through the biogas project.

Deans and other officers were present to give their support.
