It was a moment of solemn reflection as family, faculty, staff, and friends gathered at the University Pioneer Church for a commendation service in honour of Elder Afolabi Raphael Babaoye. A diligent staff, Babaoye who passed away on July 25, 2026 served in the University Library for over two decades, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, kindness, and excellence.
During the service, his daughter, Deborah Jesutofunmi Afolabi, shared a moving biography, highlighting his journey of faith, family, and service. She described him as a man who lived with humility, integrity, and love — a father who instilled values of hard work and compassion, and a professional who gave his best to the University community. His life story reflected resilience in the face of personal loss, yet unwavering devotion to God and his family.
Colleagues and friends also paid tribute. Dr. Felicia Umahi described him as “a hardworking, committed and dedicated employee, who never discriminated against anyone.” Family member Sola Dada reflected on his fatherly role in her life, saying, “He was committed to his family. I saw him as my father. Until his passing, we were very close,” while a member of the Christ Apostolic Church where he worshipped, Elder Emmanuel Olatunji, remembered him as “sacrificial in his giving.”
In his homily, Deputy Provost of the Postgraduate School, Pastor (Dr.) Sunday Audu reminded the congregation of God’s abiding presence in times of grief. He acknowledged the deep personal losses Elder Babaoye endured — the passing of his wife and son — yet noted his unwavering faith. Pastor Audu emphasized the hope of resurrection, quoting Job 14:14 and 1 Corinthians 15:22: “Death reminds us of the frailty of life but through the grace of God, we shall one day rise and spend eternity with God in Heaven.”
Representing the President/Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, the University Bursar, Prof. Folorunso Akande, praised Elder Babaoye’s life of service: “Throughout his years of service, he was known for his commitment to excellence — a gentle man who treated all with kindness. His commitment to his family reflected his commitment to duty and to God. His life is marked with dedication and respect for others,” adding, “I pray that God will comfort his family and friends.”
Babcock University honours Elder Babaoye’s memory as a devoted staff member whose contributions to the University Library and the community will remain an enduring legacy.
