BEDC Participates in National Capacity-Building Workshop on Enhancing Entrepreneurship Education in Nigerian Universities

  • 10:00 AM
  • Abuja Continental Hotel

The Babcock Entrepreneurship Development Centre (BEDC) recently joined innovation leaders, educators, and entrepreneurship development experts from across Nigeria at a transformative capacity-building workshop titled “Enhancing Entrepreneurship Education in Nigerian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).”

The three-day event was hosted at the prestigious Abuja Continental Hotel, and facilitated by the British Council in collaboration with De Montfort University (UK) and Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB). The workshop brought together key stakeholders from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, all united by a shared goal: to reimagine and strengthen entrepreneurship education for lasting national impact.

Reimagining Entrepreneurship Education in Nigeria

Over the course of the workshop, participants engaged in in-depth sessions covering:

  • Comparative analysis of EDC models across institutions
  • Designing sustainable, student-focused entrepreneurship programmes
  • Evaluating national entrepreneurship trends and data
  • Stakeholder mapping and long-term strategy planning

For BEDC, the experience was both enriching and eye-opening. It provided an opportunity to reflect on current practices while gaining valuable insights into how entrepreneurship education can become more experiential, inclusive, and impactful.

Key Insights and Takeaways

Some of the critical takeaways from the workshop include:

  1. Learning by Doing Matters: Entrepreneurship education must go beyond theory. Students need practical environments where they can experiment, build, fail, and try again—mirroring real-world entrepreneurial journeys.
  2. Sustainability Must Be Intentional: Successful entrepreneurship centres require structured funding mechanisms that include alumni engagement, industry partnerships, and strong institutional support.
  3. Collaboration Is Key: No centre can thrive in isolation. Stakeholder collaboration—across academia, industry, policy, and community—is essential for long-term success and national relevance.

Gratitude and Looking Forward

We express deep appreciation to the outstanding facilitators and partners:
Daniel Emenahor (British Council), Prof. Seun Kolade (Sheffield Business School), Prof. Muyiwa Oyinlola (De Montfort University), Timothy Whitehead (Aston University), Prof. Arinola Adefila (Buckinghamshire New University), and Jude Feranmi Adejuwon (CcHUB).

We also acknowledge the contributions of fellow participants from across Nigeria, including Sorbarikor LeburaProf. Olalekan YinusaDr. Esther Aderinto, and many others who continue to champion innovation in education.

Our Commitment at BEDC

At Babcock University’s BEDC, we remain steadfast in our mission to empower students with the skills, mindset, and opportunities to thrive as job creators and changemakers. This workshop reaffirmed our commitment to building entrepreneurship education that is not only relevant, but revolutionary.

As we move forward, we are excited to implement the insights gained, foster new collaborations, and contribute to the national conversation on building a more resilient and opportunity-rich future for young Nigerian entrepreneurs.
