Babcock University has officially opened the 10th session of the Babcock International Model United Nations (BIMUN 2026), reaffirming its position as a leading institution for leadership development, diplomacy, and global citizenship.
Themed "Better Together: A Decade of BIMUN Advancing the United Nations' Vision for Peace, Development and Human Rights," this landmark edition brings together more than 500 delegates from across Africa for five days of dialogue, negotiation, and collaborative problem-solving.
As Nigeria's first Model United Nations conference hosted by a private university, BIMUN has spent the last decade equipping young people with the confidence, knowledge, and diplomatic skills needed to address some of the world's most pressing challenges.
Declaring the conference open, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole,the President/Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University described BIMUN as a platform where ideas are transformed into action and future leaders are prepared to serve humanity with integrity and purpose.
Representing the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mrs. Kehinde Oshotimehin encouraged delegates to embrace dialogue, empathy, and collaboration, reminding them that peace begins when people choose to listen to one another.
Delivering a keynote interaction, former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, commended Babcock University for investing in youth leadership and nation-building. He challenged delegates to become solution providers, stressing that effective leadership is built on continuous learning, active listening, accountability, measurable impact, and an unwavering commitment to humanity.
Throughout the conference, delegates will simulate proceedings of major United Nations bodies, debating issues ranging from climate change and international security to sustainable development and human rights while developing practical leadership and negotiation skills.
As BIMUN marks ten years of excellence, the conference continues to inspire a new generation of African leaders committed to diplomacy, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.
