Babcock University proudly celebrates the outstanding achievements of Dr. Oluwatosin Shokunbi, a lecturer in the Department of Basic Sciences, whose groundbreaking contributions to environmental chemistry have earned her three prestigious awards in 2026.
In recognition of her excellence in research and commitment to solving real-world environmental challenges, Dr. Shokunbi received the President /Vice-Chancellor's Faculty Research Award at Babcock University, the Prof. Kayode Adebowale National Young Researcher's Prize for Women in Chemical Sciences, and the AGNES Junior Research Grant (Special Category – Female), supported by the African-German Network of Excellence in Science in partnership with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Dr. Shokunbi's research focuses on some of the world's most pressing environmental concerns, including microplastics, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and other emerging contaminants. Through innovative approaches in green chemistry, sustainable materials and circular economy principles, her work is contributing practical solutions that promote healthier communities and a more sustainable environment.
Beyond her research accomplishments, Dr. Shokunbi is widely recognised for her dedication to mentoring young scientists, particularly women pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). She also contributes to strengthening research capacity across Africa through collaboration, academic leadership and scientific engagement.
Commenting on her philosophy, Dr. Shokunbi believes that "science should not merely explain the world—it should help make it healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable." This conviction continues to guide her work as a researcher, educator and mentor.
