In response to rising security challenges across the nation, Babcock University has unveiled a state-of-the-art drone surveillance initiative in partnership with New Horizon. The system extends coverage up to a 30-kilometer radius beyond the university campus, reinforcing safety for students, staff, and the surrounding community.
At the official launch, held at the New Horizon complex on Babcock University’s main campus, Vice Chancellor Prof. Afolarin Ojewole emphasized the institution’s holistic commitment to student welfare, “Babcock is not only concerned about academics, but about character and security. Whilst we are watching after our own, we are also looking out for those around our community so that together, we can have an ecosystem where you close your eyes when you go to bed at night.”
The initiative is strengthened by New Horizon’s donation of a high-performance drone and surveillance screen. Prof. Ojewole further announced plans to invest in two additional drones to expand coverage and enhance emergency response capabilities. Discussions are also underway to integrate hands-on training in drone infrastructure and robotics into the university’s academic offerings, equipping students with practical skills in emerging technologies.
Managing Director/CEO of New Horizon, Mr. Tim Akano, expressed confidence in the partnership, highlighting the organizations’ 22-year collaboration.
“We are happy to donate this drone to BU to create another layer of security architecture. We have been part of your journey for the past 22 years and it’s been a win-win and this is another layer to strengthen and cement our relationship permanently,” he said.
He said he is confident that Babcock University has the capacity to maximize its potential noting, “This drone can fly up to 7,000 feet, deliver clear night vision, and provide real-time imaging to aid rapid response.”
The partnership also includes comprehensive training in drone operations, repairs, and maintenance, ensuring sustainability and skill transfer. The launch event brought together stakeholders from the Ilishan Police Force led by CSP Betty Ajuwon, the Ilishan Development Association, and University officials, underscoring a united front in advancing community safety.
